The open heart surgery field trip today was completely fascinating, but enough to let me know that being a doctor is not the career for me (like I didn't already know that, but whatev). I had never really thought about what an open heart surgery would include before; duh they have to open the heart, but I'd never really thought about what that meant. The slicing through of the layers and the stopping of the heart and the machine that looked like the suction thing dentists stick in your mouth to suck up spit but sucking up blood. Sluuuuuuurp. It was nasty. While I'm not overly fond of people sticking their hands into somebody else's chest cavity, the bypass itself was really cool. Our doctor had a sense of humor, and squirted an artery a couple times before attaching it. Early in the surgery, somebody asked if all of the poking and prodding of the heart had any negative effects on it, and he says, "...yes and no," and then starts poking/pushing/drumming on the heart for us. It was funny in a terribly wrong sort of way.

Have I mentioned lately my undying love for Chorale? Particularly when our concerts kick butt? Yeah, probably. After a week of being frustrated and banging our heads into walls, our concert was fantastic. Take that, "but-you'll-never-be-as-good-as-last-year"-ers. A bunch of graduates from last year showed up to support us ("support," for many, here having the meaning of "hope that we would do badly so they could privately laugh about how everything went to hell in a handcart after they left and think that since they left, the golden days of the CHS music program are no more"), and they were impressed. Everything went so very well, and tomorrow in class we should just have a huge love fest as Mr. Nesseth smiled through everything we did. It was a very good sign.
